CHAPTER SEVEN
IT WAS late in the evening and Flynn was in his study working. His concentration was hardly what it should have been, considering he had a book to deliver to his publisher by the end of the month, but right now ancient Celtic chieftainsâ plans for reinforcing their fortresses and their strategies to protect their tuaths against invaders from across the sea did not rivet his attention as emphatically as they usually did.
For one thing, he wasnât alone in the huge apartment, as he normally would have been. Every now and then during the day his attention would be diverted by the sound of his daughterâs laughter, or her motherâs calmly voiced reply. Sounds that even the thick oak doors that guarded the various rooms could not completely dim because Flynn was so intimately attuned to them. He had even found himself deliberately listening out for them. Theyâd been living with him for almost two whole days now, and already the pattern of his quiet, fairly ordered existence had been altered irrevocably.
At some point during each day Caitlin would take herself and Sorcha off on a longish ramble around the estate, and if Flynn hadnât already known she had a passionate penchant for fresh air whatever the weatherâhe would have been seriously impressed by her dedication to being in the great outdoors. That was one of the things heâd found so irresistible about her when theyâd first metâ¦her appreciation of the elements and her love and respect for nature, which he shared.
Both Caitlin and Sorcha spent a lot of time with Bridie while Flynn worked on his book, and heâd arranged with the housekeeper for their dinner to be brought up to his own private dining room in the evenings, so that Caitlin wouldnât feel things were uncomfortably formal. Heâd seen the strain on her face, and he didnât want any tension she felt affecting her relationship with their daughter. Instead he wanted to help her realise that this was their home now.
After dinner he chose to spend time with Sorcha, playing or reading her a story before bedtime. He tried not to think too much about the hopes heâd had when Danny was born of doing the same with his son, but already Flynn had grown to anticipate the precious moments with his daughter with increasing pleasure. It was after Sorcha had gone to bed that was proving the most testing time for him. Even if he decided to go back to his study and continue working into the early hours of the morning, as he was doing now, he still had to deal with the fact that Caitlin would have settled herself in an armchair by the crackling fire, her head in a book, her feet bare and her soft blonde hair a golden and too touchable cloud around her head.
His body inconveniently tightened and he shifted in his chair. Why couldnât he trust himself to be alone in the same room with her? That wasnât difficult to answer.
